History of Lay-Speaking in Pikes Peak Sub-District

The Lay-Speaking program for the Conference was started in 1981.  At that time there was 6 Districts and this sub-district was a part of the Mile High/Pikes Peak District which included Castle Rock, Monument and Colorado Springs.  Tommy Gleaton was appointed as the first Lay Speaking Director of the District.  During the next 14 years, Tommy lead the district to an impressive number of lay speakers and the district seated the most number of Certified and Local Lay Speakers in the Conference. In 1990, with a change to 5 districts we became a sub-district and billed Pikes Peak Sub-District.  In 1995 Jim Orndoff became the Lay Speaking Director of the sub-district until 1997 when Helen Griggs and Jim Sauls became Co-Directors of the sub-district. There are now over 56 Lay Speakers in Pikes Peak Sub-District.

            In 2002, under the leadership of Griggs and Sauls, the Sub-District Lay Speaking Committee begin preparation for the Peabody Program (Rev Joe Peabody of First United Methodist Church, Marietta, GA who had been one of the trainers in the Rocky Mountain Conference 2002 Lay Ministry Convocation gave approval for the sub-district to use his program for a workshop.  Coined the Laity Learning Series, which was conducted from January 2003 to April 2003 and resumed in September 2003 until completed in November 2003.  Facilitators for the series consisted of local Lay Speakers with participants from several cities in the southern part of the Conference.

The sub-district conducts 2 Lay Speaking Programs each year, one in the Spring of the year and one in the Fall of the year for both Basic and Advanced participants. The next Class is tentatively scheduled for April of 2006. The Co-Directors of the Sub-District Lay Speaking Program are Dr. Jim Sauls of Peoples United Methodist Church and Mike Wheat of Central United Methodist Church.

Dates for the Fall class are October 26  from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. and October 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at East UMC

This advanced course focuses on acquiring a better understanding of the church and its ministry needs; learning what it means to be a minister; doing the work of Christ in the church and in the world; and being more fully equipped to lead others in exploring and using their spiritual gifts.
